The Rich History of Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Early Beginnings and Medieval Roots

Rotterdam, a vibrant port city in the Netherlands, boasts a history as dynamic as its modern skyline. Its story begins in the 13th century when a dam was built on the Rotte River, giving the city its name—Rotte meaning river and dam referring to the structure that tamed it. By 1340, Rotterdam received its city rights, marking its rise as a trading hub. Its strategic location along the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta made it a vital link for goods flowing between Europe and the North Sea.

In the medieval period, Rotterdam thrived on fishing and trade. The city’s early economy leaned heavily on herring, a staple of Dutch commerce. By the 16th century, Rotterdam’s port was bustling, with merchants exporting wool, wine, and grain. The city’s growth, however, was not without challenges. Fires, floods, and conflicts, including the Eighty Years’ War, tested Rotterdam’s resilience.

The Golden Age and Maritime Dominance

During the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, Rotterdam solidified its status as a maritime powerhouse. The city became a key player in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), with ships departing for Asia and the Americas. Rotterdam’s shipyards crafted vessels that fueled global trade, while its merchants amassed wealth. The city’s innovative spirit shone through in its early adoption of windmills for industrial purposes, a hallmark of Dutch ingenuity.

The 18th and 19th centuries brought further expansion. Rotterdam’s port grew to rival Amsterdam’s, with new docks and warehouses accommodating larger ships. The Industrial Revolution transformed the city, introducing steamships and railways that connected Rotterdam to Europe’s interior. By the late 19th century, the New Waterway, a man-made channel, was constructed to ensure direct access to the North Sea, cementing Rotterdam’s role as Europe’s gateway.

The Devastation of World War II

Rotterdam’s history took a tragic turn in May 1940 when Nazi Germany bombed the city during World War II. The Rotterdam Blitz obliterated the historic center, leaving only a few structures, like the St. Lawrence Church, standing. The devastation was profound, with over 900 deaths and thousands left homeless. Yet, Rotterdam’s spirit remained unbroken. The city’s residents rallied to rebuild, embracing modernist architecture that would define its future skyline.

Rotterdam’s rebirth after the Blitz is a testament to its resilience—a city that turned tragedy into a canvas for innovation.

Post-War Rebirth and Modern Marvels

Post-war Rotterdam became a laboratory for architectural innovation. The city embraced bold designs, from the cube houses of Piet Blom to the iconic Erasmus Bridge, nicknamed “The Swan” for its graceful curve. Rotterdam’s port, now the largest in Europe, drives global trade, handling millions of containers annually. The city’s skyline, punctuated by towers like the Zalmhaventoren, reflects its ambition and forward-thinking ethos.

Today, Rotterdam blends history with modernity. Historic sites like the Delfshaven district, where pilgrims departed for America in 1620, coexist with cutting-edge structures. The city’s cultural scene thrives, with museums like the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and vibrant festivals celebrating its diverse population. Rotterdam’s history is a story of reinvention, making it a fitting embarkation point for our unforgettable cruise.

Rotterdam’s Cultural and Economic Significance

Rotterdam’s identity is inseparable from its port, which remains a global logistics hub. The city’s multicultural fabric, shaped by centuries of trade and immigration, is evident in its food, festivals, and neighborhoods. From Indonesian rijsttafels to Surinamese roti, Rotterdam’s culinary scene mirrors its diversity. Its commitment to sustainability, seen in initiatives like floating farms and green roofs, positions Rotterdam as a leader in urban innovation.

Our Unforgettable Journey from Rotterdam Aboard the Nieuw Statendam

Embarking from Rotterdam: A Magical Start

Our adventure began in Rotterdam, where the sleek silhouette of Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam awaited us at the port. From our Zalmhaventoren apartment, we could see the ship’s gleaming hull, a promise of the journey ahead. The embarkation process was seamless, and as we stepped aboard, the ship’s elegant atrium welcomed us with its soaring ceilings and Dutch-inspired decor. Our Oceanview Family Cabin was a cozy retreat, blending modern comfort with nautical charm.

A tour with relatives introduced us to the ship’s highlights: the lively Lido Pool, the serene Crow’s Nest with panoramic views, and the vibrant World Stage. Easter lunch at the Lido Market was a festive affair, with global flavors from sushi to Dutch pancakes. Emotional farewells to our nephews’ parents were softened by Rotterdam’s stunning skyline, captured in photos as we sailed away.

Sailing away from Rotterdam felt like leaving a piece of home, but the Nieuw Statendam promised a world of adventure.

Evening brought reunions with cruising friends, a lively Formula 1 screening by the Lido Pool, and a sumptuous dinner in the Main Dining Room, where global dishes like Moroccan tagine and Dutch stamppot delighted our palates. The kids loved Club HAL’s activities, while we savored the ship’s elegant ambiance, reflecting on Rotterdam’s charm as we drifted into the English Channel.

Sea Days of Luxury and Discovery

English Channel: A Day of Elegance

Our first sea day in the English Channel was a luxurious blend of relaxation and enrichment. Breakfast in the Main Dining Room featured eggs Benedict with Channel views, while lunch offered beef tenderloin and Dover sole. A World Stage presentation on Casablanca inspired us with vivid imagery. Dressy Night at Pinnacle Grill was a highlight, with stellar beef tenderloin and Delmonico steak, followed by a dynamic dance show at the World Stage.

Tip: Book Pinnacle Grill early to secure a spot for this upscale dining experience.

Bay of Biscay: Culinary and Cultural Delights

Crossing the Bay of Biscay, we enjoyed a smooth sea day filled with indulgence. A lavish lobster Benedict brunch in the Dining Room set the tone, followed by a vibrant World Stage talk on Agadir. The Mariners Reception by the Lido Pool fostered a sense of community, while dinner at Tamarind’s Pan-Asian menu, featuring Penang red curry with duck, was a culinary triumph.

Atlantic Ocean: Tranquility and Intrigue

Two unexpected sea days in the Atlantic, due to a canceled Casablanca stop, became highlights. The Nieuw Statendam’s elegance shone through, with Dutch-inspired decor and ocean views. Breakfast featured omelets, while the kids crafted iris collages in the Explorations Central lounge. We lounged by the pool, retreated to the Crow’s Nest, and indulged in spa massages. Nami Sushi’s sashimi and a World Stage show added flair, while a secretive camera crew sparked intrigue.

The Atlantic’s vastness was matched only by the ship’s warmth, turning a detour into a cherished memory.

Another sea day brought marine life lectures, Ocean Bar trivia, and a Canaletto dinner with osso buco and Chianti. The ship’s luxurious design made every moment magical.

Cultural Immersion in Agadir, Morocco

Our first port, Agadir, was a vibrant dive into Moroccan culture. We began at Mosque Mohammed V, marveling at its stunning architecture. Agadir Marina buzzed with coastal charm, while the kasbah ruins of Agadir Oufella offered panoramic views and historical insights. A camel ride connected us to Berber traditions, and Souk El Had overwhelmed our senses with spices, crafts, and khobz bread. Paradise Valley’s natural pools and fish “pedicures” were serene, followed by argan oil tastings. Back onboard, a Morimoto-inspired dinner at Tamarind capped a day of cultural immersion.

Tip: Bring cash for Souk El Had’s treasures and wear comfortable shoes for Agadir’s diverse terrain.

Lanzarote’s Volcanic Wonders

In Arrecife, Lanzarote, we rented a car with a spontaneous fifth companion for a day of adventure. Cueva de los Verdes, a 4,000-year-old lava tube, dazzled with vibrant formations. Jameos del Agua, César Manrique’s volcanic cave masterpiece, featured a lake with albino crabs and Canarian cuisine. Mirador del Río offered stunning views of La Graciosa, while Timanfaya National Park’s Mars-like landscape included geothermal demos and volcanic-grilled food. We reflected at Charco de San Ginés before returning to the ship.

Tip: Book a suitable car early and prioritize key sites to maximize your Lanzarote adventure.

Tenerife’s Natural Splendor

Santa Cruz de Tenerife blended adventure and relaxation. A rented car took us to Anaga Rural Park, where Mirador Cruz del Carmen, Llano de los Loros, and Pico del Inglés offered breathtaking views and misty laurel forest treks. Playa de las Teresitas provided golden sands and a seafood lunch with prawns and papas arrugadas. The ship’s festive sailaway and Tamarind’s Indonesian Rijsttafel dinner were perfect endings.

Funchal, Madeira: A Thrilling Ride

Funchal, Madeira, was a highlight with a thrilling trike tour through the old town, Câmara de Lobos, banana fields, the misty Valley of the Nuns, Cabo Girão’s skywalk, and more. Lunch in Zona Velha featured bolo do caco and coral beer. The CR7 Museum celebrated Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy. Onboard, Nami Sushi Bar and a World Stage show with magic and acrobatics dazzled.

Tip: Book a trike tour for a fun, efficient way to see Funchal’s highlights.

Porto’s Rainy Charm

A rainy day in Leixões and Porto began with a tuk-tuk tour through Porto’s historic streets, visiting the Dom Luís I Bridge, Ribeira District, Porto Cathedral, and São Bento Station’s azulejo tiles. Despite the weather, the adventure was vibrant, enhanced by the film crew’s presence. Onboard, Tamarind’s exotic cuisine and the Lido Fun Fair’s games delighted all.

Dover and London: A Grand Finale

Docked in Dover, we took a high-speed train to London for a private black cab tour with guide Greg Dorrington. We marveled at the London Eye, Big Ben, Parliament, Millennium Bridge, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Leadenhall Market, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Graffiti Tunnel, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace. A pub lunch added local flavor. The serene sail-away past Dover’s White Cliffs was a poignant farewell.

London’s energy and Dover’s cliffs were the perfect crescendo to our journey.

Disembarkation Day: A Bittersweet Return to Rotterdam

Disembarkation day in Rotterdam was bittersweet. The short walk from the ship to our Zalmhaventoren apartment felt surreal after such an epic journey. Professional photos captured onboard memories, from gala nights to kids’ Club HAL adventures. Sven and Liam reunited with their parents, ready to return to school, while we longed for the Nieuw Statendam’s elegance.

A Mysterious Hint

Throughout our cruise, a camera crew followed us, hinting at a special project. Stay tuned in a few months for exciting news we can’t yet share!

The ship’s luxurious design, warm hospitality, and diverse itinerary left us yearning for more. Rotterdam’s skyline welcomed us home, but our hearts remained at sea.

Ode to the Nieuw Statendam’s Enchantment

From Rotterdam’s embrace, we sailed away,
The Nieuw Statendam gleamed in the morning’s ray.
Through oceans vast, from Channel to shore,
Each port a new tale, each wave something more.

Agadir’s souks, with spices and light,
Lanzarote’s lava, a volcanic flight.
Tenerife’s forests, Madeira’s bright bloom,
Porto’s wet streets, yet no trace of gloom.

The Atlantic whispered, serene and grand,
With elegant decks and a world-class band.
From London’s bold pulse to Dover’s white face,
Each moment a gem in the heart’s secret place.

Sven and Liam danced, their laughter the song,
Club HAL’s bright joy kept them sailing along.
Tamarind’s flavors, Pinnacle’s grace,
Crow’s Nest’s soft hush, a tranquil space.

A camera crew trailed, their lenses a clue,
A story unfolds, a secret to brew.
Back home in Rotterdam, the skyline’s our guide,
Yet the ship’s siren call pulls our hearts to the tide.
